The Protect Pure Maths campaign brings together mathematicians, policy makers, education professionals and maths fans to make the case for pure maths.

Who We Are:

Protect Pure Maths has been founded in partnership with the London Mathematical Society, the UK’s oldest national learned society dedicated solely to maths.

The campaign secretariat is provided by Connect, a leading public affairs company that specialises in public affairs and political strategy, corporate communications, and reputation management.

The campaign was launched with a donation from XTX Markets, a leading algorithmic trading company that is focused on mathematics and technology.

Steering Group

Protect Pure Maths is overseen by a Steering Group. The Steering Group  meets on a monthly basis. The terms of reference of the Steering Group are:

  1. To set the objectives for the campaign, which exists to protect pure maths and advance all the mathematical sciences;

  2. To define and execute the campaign strategy;

  3. To co-ordinate campaign activities and communications, working collaboratively with partners and supporters.

Current members of the Steering Group are:

  • Professor Paul Glaister CBE, Honorary Secretary of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education, University of Reading

  • Simon Edwards, Chief Executive, London Mathematical Society

  • Simon Coyle, Head of Philanthropy, XTX Markets
