PPM statement on the closure of mathematics degree courses at Oxford Brookes University

Oxford Brookes University has proposed the closure of its mathematics degree courses (November 2023). Protect Pure Maths is deeply concerned about the continuing trend of closures and cuts to mathematics departments, particularly at universities requiring lower qualifications at entrance (lower-tariff universities).

Universities are under significant financial pressure and, as autonomous institutions, they need to take difficult decisions about the courses that they run, as well as their staffing and structures. However, the Government and politicians must also put in place the right directives and incentives to ensure that the UK’s higher education provision is sustainable, geographically diverse, and that it provides the skills, knowledge and research our economy requires.

Mathematics will play a critical role in the future of the UK economy, with mathematical and quantitative skills being increasingly required for a wide range of future careers. As such, it is crucial that we safeguard the future of mathematics departments in UK universities, across all entry-tariff levels.

PPM will continue to engage with universities and the Government for solutions in the coming months.
