XTX Markets back campaign to protect pure maths

XTX Markets, the innovation-driven algorithmic trading firm, is backing the newly launched Protect Pure Maths campaign. The campaign is working to promote pure mathematics by increasing understanding of its value to society and to protect pure maths departments from further significant cuts in higher education.

The campaign supported by XTX Markets was prompted by concerns that some universities are shifting away from pure mathematics research and courses. The number of students studying maths at A-Level rose 10% between 2015-2020. Maths is now the most popular A-Level subject, taken by over 90,000 students – demonstrating just how important it is to secure the future of higher education courses in Pure Maths.

Alex Gerko, Founder and co-CEO at XTX Markets, said: “Myself and a large number of my colleagues built our careers upon the foundation of our pure math studies and we are pleased to be supporting the campaign to Protect Pure Maths and to help promote the subject in the UK. STEM skills are crucial for the UK’s productivity, and a shortage of STEM skills in the workforce is one of our key economic problems – our future relies on our children taking up STEM subjects, which is why Pure Maths should be protected at all costs.”
